John Kim
Listen to "John Kim The Angry Therapist" on Spreaker.
Author John Kim is known as "The Angry Therapist." In his new book: book I USED TO BE A MISERABLE F***: An Everyman’s Guide to a Meaningful Life (HarperOne) - John explores the questions of what it is to be a man in today's society. He creates an important dialogue and covers essential topics, from vulnerability and posturing to workouts and women.
Kim's goal is to encourage men to “think about who you are now and who you want to be…I’m not here to lecture you. I’m coming with you, not at you. Talking to you like one of my friends—the men I sweat with, eat with, ride motorcycles with, get crepes and share...feelings with. Yes, real men eat crepes.”
As Kim explains:
boys typically find their models for manhood in their fathers.
we are living in a fatherless nation: too many boys are left without adequate role models or coping skills to deal with life’s various issues.
the result is that out of the 45,000 people who commit suicide each year, 79% of them are men. And men aren’t the only victims; women and children suffer all too often at the hands of men. The cycle continues onto the next generations as one out of five teenage girls reports that she has been in an abusive relationship.
This doesn’t mean that all hope is lost. Kim draws on his own very personal experiences, not just as a therapist, but as a man, to help men unlock that trapped potential. As he explains, Kim went through a devastating divorce, and it was during some deep soul searching afterwards that he came to an astonishing realization: he was miserable and likely to blame for the problems in his life.
Armed with this new insight, Kim began The Angry Therapist blog - an admission that, while he was a licensed therapist and life coach, he was no better than the people who sought his advice.
