Ryan Jay Reviews

Listen to "Ryan Jay Reviews Gretel And Hansel" on Spreaker. Without any real reason of explanation the childhood story Hansel And Gretel has returned to our chapters with her name first. Was it to catch us off guard? To create some sort of diversion in the way of saying, "You aren't taking your little ones to this one." The only true film opening this weekend was viewed by Ryan. He takes us deep into the dark story reaching areas and reminders of why this kids book was a family favorite and yet in its own way it's extremely haunting to think of mean old witch fattening up Hansel to eat him.

I Live Because You Have Gifted

Listen to "I Live Because You Have Gifted" on Spreaker. We've always heard how kids say the darndest things. So do adults. Especially that inner voice that endlessly knocks on your attention span. You say the darndest things but usually choose to walk away from why the thought entered your path. Lets be up front and honest. There's nothing worse then walking into a job you hate. Maybe not hate. You just don't agree with the season you're presently in. How do you reach beyond that storm? I've watched 41 years of Broadcasters walk those halls and still put on some of the best performances. How do comedians confess to having an extremely dark path and yet they powerfully deliver messages that make huge rooms laugh? Do you really think your boss enjoys being in the office? Plastic coated bathroom mirror smiles aren't reality. There's something completely invisible that keeps hard work, dedication and loyalty on a path of success. Doubters will tell you that its the art of survival. I'm not going to argue. On this podcast we travel back to November 12, 2016. One sentence penned out during my daily handwritten prayers changed the color of the dark cloud. I live because you have gifted. Wait! That doesn't scream religion. You can stay a little longer. You live because you have been gifted. A lot of times in those radio hallways I'd ask the talent how their day was going. This reply was experienced hundreds of times, "Existing." Not a negative but a recognition of their present place. The vocal tones might have been pointed downward but the thought of knowing you exist is perfectly in tune with being present with the "Now" Have you ever looked up the words Alive and Living? One word keeps them from being the same. Alive uses the word existing. You live because you've been gifted. You exist. No matter how many times people look at you while working only to walk away... it doesn't matter. Your gift may not be for them today. People build teams to support their vision. When your vision needs to count say it, "I live because you gifted." You exist! See yourself before you let others judge or ignore.

Lauren Bright Pacheco

Listen to "Lauren Bright Pacheco From The Podcast Murder In Oregon" on Spreaker. In January of 1989 the director of Oregon's Department of Corrections, Michael Francke, was brutally stabbed to death outside his office in Salem. His murder was quickly ruled a "car burglary gone wrong" and pinned on a low-level drug dealer named Frank Gable, a man who Francke's own brother, Kevin, along with storied Oregon reporter Phil Stanford, believe has been wrongfully imprisoned for nearly 30 years. They contend Francke had uncovered a dangerous trail of corruption in the prison system- one that lead to the top of Oregon's political establishment. Murder In Oregon follows the two men on a decades-long quest, bordering on obsession, into Oregon's drug and crime infested underbelly to answer one question: Who really killed Michael Francke?

Pod-Crashing Episode 41 Trusting Evolution

Listen to "Pod-Crashing Episode 41 Trusting Evolution" on Spreaker. Pod-Crashing Episode 41: Trusting Evolution Every singer songwriter I sit with, we end up getting locked in talk about how music never stops evolving. None of the artists seem to be bothered by it. It’s as if they expect change. This might be the reason why so many fans of music enjoy listening to a live album. The songs we love are there! It’s just performed a little bit differently. The reason why I bring this up is because so many Podcasters have a difficult time moving through evolution. Great shows have totally disappeared off the map because the performers felt their episodes were moving in the wrong direction. I get it. It’s an odd feeling that takes over. Bringing the podcast to life feels like a job more than a connection to content. Getting over that hurdle puts podcasters in a decision to “play out” a “timeout.” That in itself can easily turn into “drop out.” The evolution of your podcast is completely natural. It’s one of the first things I cover when designing shows with businesses and solo performers. I get to know their vision. We discuss the highs and lows. The time required not only to show prep and layout the tracks but to market the episodes on social media. Being that close to a project puts you in the center of podcast fatigue. The moment you try something new suddenly the censors are blaring like WWII air raid sirens. In the beginning you’ve got the confidence to participate with change but when the numbers aren’t instantly showing up? We revert to old habits. Which puts weight on every reason why you’re podcasting. It’s decision time. Do you start an entirely different podcast or dump what feels like a bad taste. We’ve make it too easy to locate free time. Once you get that sweet surgery flavor in your creative system it becomes difficult to get back up on the horse. In the early moments of podcast building you were able to push your way through invisible walls and stumbles. Once you start getting the itch that something needs to evolve it’ll become that voice in the back of your head that won’t leave you alone. The evolution of your podcast. There has to be change! Each episode is a new lesson learned. Through experience you’re able to strengthen your vocal delivery or tone it down. Through awareness a natural exchange begins to unfold. Don’t ever stop giving yourself permission to screw up. My podcast Unplugged and Totally Uncut is always under the microscope. It’s nowhere near where it started. I wanted to be Casery Kasum or Dick Clark and share the journey of the singer songwriters and performers. I wanted to take it to massive level of this is what we did to get here. Then one day I asked myself, “Why are you doing what everybody else has already done?” This is why I’d probably turn down a conversation with Paul McCartney. What’s he going to say that hasn’t already been lived? That oh wow moment. Does Mr. McCartney still have it in him? I keep practicing! Cuz the day the phone call chimes in he’s gonna know we aren’t talking about The Beatles, Wings or global tours. While lecturing on campuses I invite students to participate with the famous people interviews. One rule. Don’t say anything about their past. All thoughts and conversation are based on what is in the now. I had to evolve to get there. Then believe in why it would be this way. A recent WTF moment was with legendary Rock drummer Deen Castronova talking about never becoming the front man of a band. He’ll sing lead vocals all day and night but he’s not going up there where the people are. Unplugged and Totally Uncut went through a huge change about a year ago when I began posting a show called Unplugged Addiction to Creativity. I wanted to be real. Like most people we’re all getting tired of reading about which person of fame elected to take their life. The numbers are through the roof! I’ll never stop asking why while doing everything in my creative power to write and produce features that put focus on what it’s really like to be overtaken by the creative beast. The evolution of your podcast can include extensions. I love what Jake Brennan is doing with his atmosphere. Disgraceland and Club 27 embrace the dark storytelling format of music’s unspoken history. Each of the podcasts feed the other. He uses the platform to cross pollinate other ventures he’s diving into at Double Elvis. Lauren Bright Pachenco is the journalism force behind Murder In Oregon. A series of episodes digging deep into murder, government corruption and more. I asked her about life after this story is complete, would there be more unsolved Oregon murders? She paused. Then laughed. And said she couldn’t dive into the future at this time. My professional guess is yes. I can’t wait to see how she evolves her skills as a storyteller and investigator into a giant web of continuations. Podcasting isn’t terrestrial radio. The one thing I took from the conversation between Bob Pittman of iHeart Media and Charlamagne Tha God is that it’s still an open platform for creative minds to explore. Because I’m so far out of the tower signal loop I reached out to Bo Thompson of WBT Charlotte. The kid has evolved into a master at designing and executing portraits of legendary Broadcast talent and more. It’s totally got his signature all over it. Is podcasting within the ranks of radio as free spirited as blogging was during its heyday? In which direction will future podcast episodes grow now that Google has brought Audio SEO’s forward? The question Kraus Group Marketing is asking Podcasts and S.E.R.P’s or SERP’s the next big thing? Search Engine Result Pages. SERPS are extremely important because it allows your fans and followers to get to know your website. If you’re truly into podcasting because it’s gonna make you money, this is a priceless part of your podcast evolution. So what’s the moral of the story? Let your podcast presence go and grow. Let it have a life of its own! Somedays it may act like an out of control two year old child, a constantly demanding teenager or well-oiled seasoned middle aged expression of great content. My podcast Poetic Elevation. In the beginning it had to be one path with no way off. I invited Southern Preachers to hang their messages and learned quickly how disconnected that thought was from how listeners want their podcasts. The evolution of the episodes began to put focus on Biblical studies but with my voice. They still wouldn’t have it. My friend Denny wrote to me, “Everything you’re saying has already be shared a trillion times. It’s nothing new. If you’re truly into this approach put lifestyle ahead of all things. You’re gonna have to get real.” Play with your podcast. See if it bites you back. Pull on its history and see if it snaps. Bring an approach you thought you’d never try. Never stop taking chances. Evolve…

Deen Castronova

Listen to "Drummer Deen Castronova Now With Revolution Saints Releases Rise" on Spreaker. Deen Castronovo (The Dead Daisies, ex-Journey, Bad English), Doug Aldrich (The Dead Daisies, Burning Rain, ex-Whitesnake, DIO), and Jack Blades (Night Ranger), Revolution Saints have now completed their incredible third album, “Rise”. As with the first two well-received albums, Rev Saints (as the fans like to call them) are bringing back the classic melodic rock style that thrilled and delighted legions of fans in the ‘80s and ‘90s and still does today! Inspiring, uplifting vocals, soaring melodies, and musicianship to die for is what you get in spades here. Simply put, it is completely badass. Superbly handling drums and lead vocals is the one and only Deen Castronovo. Already renowned for his drum talents and backing vocals in Journey, Bad English, and more, Deen's excellent vocal talents are once again receiving a well-deserved spotlight on this release. On bass, and co-lead vocals on a few tracks, Jack Blades is well known for his melodic, yet hard rocking approach to songwriting and playing via multiple classic albums by his main band Night Ranger, as well as with the Damn Yankees and the Shaw/Blades releases. On guitar, Doug Aldrich lends his fiery guitar attack to round out this dream-come-true melodic rock band. Doug, who left Whitesnake after a fruitful 12 year run (including co-writing 2010’s critically acclaimed "Forevermore" release) and also of Burning Rain and formerly of DIO, has a deep pedigree and is one of today’s most respected rock guitarists. You can tell by the name - and the names involved - that REVOLUTION SAINTS is not going to be your average rock 'n roll band. The project is the vision of Frontiers' President Serafino Perugino, who for years had hoped to work on a project where Deen would be the lead vocalist. Having previously worked with all three artists on different projects on Frontiers, having Deen, Jack and Doug on board together was a dream come true for Perugino. With production overseen by more and more in demand in-house Frontiers man, Alessandro Del Vecchio, the recording process took place in Milan and in Doug and Jack’s own studios in California and Seattle. Songwriting was handled by Del Vecchio, Aldrich, and Blades with contributions from fellow Frontiers recording artist Dan Rossall (of UK newcomers PASSION). Of special note, the poignant ballad “Eyes Of A Child” was penned by Jack Blades and Tommy Shaw. REVOLUTION SAINTS' music is played with a heart, soul, and spirit that shines through in the music. These songs highlight the passion and enthusiasm of three of the best all-around rock ‘n roll musicians in the game today.

Bill Sullivan

Listen to "Bill Sullivan Back With More From Please To Meet Me" on Spreaker. In PLEASED TO MEET ME: Genes, Germs, and the Curious Forces That Make Us Who We Are (published by National Geographic) research scientist Bill Sullivan offers a groundbreaking new window into how genetics, epigenetics and microbes work with our environment to make us who we are. Sullivan, a professor of pharmacology and microbiology at Indiana University School of Medicine, draws on cutting-edge research to illuminate how our genes not only dictate our physical traits but can also have an enormous influence on our personality and behavior. With wit and humor, Sullivan deconstructs provocative studies suggesting that certain genes influence whether someone is a liberal or conservative, violent or timid, lean or obese. But genetic makeup, he explains, is only part of the picture. Through a process called epigenetics, the environment can actually modify our DNA, which may explain how the behavior of our parents — for example, our mother’s behavior during pregnancy or whether our father was a smoker — can play a wide-ranging role in obesity, depression, anxiety and more. Sullivan also examines recent studies regarding how our microbiota — the trillions of microbes living inside our gut — can affect our behavior and mood. The book draws from the latest psychology research to reveal why and how our brain can trick us into performing irrational behaviors or actions detrimental to our well-being and society. It also explains why people with opposing points of view struggle to convince one another to change their minds.

Un Peace Filled

Listen to "Un Peace Filled" on Spreaker. Dwayne The Rock Johnson recently shared his inner core with Oprah during her national tour. His greatest challenge on a daily basis is being himself. I stopped what I was doing. Thought deeply not only on my reaction to it but how I was reacting to it. Being a daily writer has put me in some mind blowing places of growth, disconnection, pain, spiritual presence and forgiveness. Dwayne's greatest challenge on a daily basis is being himself. I write everyday so that others may one day write. To be there means being myself. If you're anything else then the writing takes a left turn and becomes a distraction. On my podcast Poetic Elevation there are several different types of episodes. I run the podcast like a network. The goal is to create several different layers of expressions. The Choice comes from the daily writing dating back four years. The Daily Mess reaches into the chapters of 2002. One day I'd love to do a podcast that grabs from the 1990's. There's a process on each of our walks but if we don't turn them into tools to help others grow the journey feels disconnected from the accountability required. I didn't know in July of 1994 that I'd still be writing in 2020. I didn't know myself to be myself in 2002. I thought I did. In going back to the pages the evidence clearly shows a traveler seeking something other than what he was recognized for. Do you feel that way? How do you challenge yourself to be yourself daily if you don't know yourself? Society has you labeled to be this. Your family and friends think you're this. I take great pride in those moments when my wife asks me about things that have happened somewhere in the past 26 years. I go to the journals. I study the patterns before during and after. On this podcast I wrap things up with a simple thought, "As I near 60 I know who I want to be. That person that's approached by the angry, hurt and lost who can't understand why I don't share the same expressions." My only comment, "I've lost a lot of energy being where you are. I don't want to be un peace filled."

Lift The Path

Listen to "Lift The Path" on Spreaker. I stopped for a moment after typing the title of this entry. Lift The Path. I wanted to change it to Lyft The Path. Lyft as in the way so many travel today. I've struggled for many years over this plan or idea of never truly getting to see the path we're supposed to be following. We've been told so many times to follow your dreams. When you get there does anything look familiar? I love sitting down to swap journeys with those who are traveling through life and all its missions. Upon that path I've met with a lot of people that walked away from what they went to school for. They felt deep in their souls that this was their calling in life. The path! Once there it all began to fade. I've been a radio broadcaster for forty one years. The one thing I didn't plan for was turning 57. The path changed. Only to realize how much there's never been a path but rather a connection to options and opportunities. In prayer and meditation I ask a lot of questions. I ask to see the path. I want to physically touch the path. I think it holds so many answers. On this podcast I go into the pages of the daily writing where I do nothing more then seek out the broken rocks, dirt, tree roots or whatever that's supposed to look like a path. I've walked the paths at McDowell Park in Charlotte for 35 years. Every dog we've adopted has been on that path with me. I hold every memory so close to my soul. The hot days on the path versus the moments of cloud bursts or just plain exhaustion. That path has never changed only the trees and plants have. The path has faced erosion but continues to be seen and experienced in ways that enlighten the imagination to keep planting your feet forward. The path! Don't want to see your path? At the very end of this podcast something totally strange happened. It was if life touched my walk and way. For five minutes I'm talking about how unfair it is to not see the path and then an answer is planted in my heart. If we are mindfully living in the present. The awareness of now. There needs to be no path only gratefulness.

The Lyrics From Billy's Forest Chapter 186

Listen to "The Lyrics From Billys Forest Chapter 186" on Spreaker. My entire life I've heard everyone from my parents to longtime friends to always be ready to forgive and forget. That can be a tough cookie. When you do forgive and forgetting becomes the struggle most feel like nothings been done to help improve. Even worse when forgiving has allowed you to forget you're instantly reminded of it because the situation has happened again. On this podcast we talk about the importance of family, friends, coworkers and others you'll one day meet but will it be accomplished in different shapes of a relationship? Trusting the moment is an incredible step toward being peace filled. But are you peaceful? Things happen everyday in the headlines that catapult your emotions back sixteen steps. How do you trust when forgetting is nearly next to impossible. Through awareness I've learned how to put focus on how much we take. We talk all day about being givers but rarely do we admit to being takers. We walk up to a well and take from it. Whether its knowledge, strength or security we tend to take what we need then move to the next well. Isn't that what inspiration and empowerment are? Look at all this good feeling stuff and its mine! I spend a lot of time reading books of motivation. I'll pause for a moment and send a note to the author via Facebook and or Twitter thanking them for sharing their experiences. While reading I felt like I was taking something. Showing gratefulness helps you experience a peace filled journey. What does that have to do with forgiving and forgetting? In all relationships there was or still is a well. Putting your focus on how it provided doesn't soften the heart but it allows you to be respectful and respect filled of those times when you needed what the well provided. Having a different view of the process helps you become stronger on the paths leading toward the next ten minutes to ten years. Who have you taken from today? Be mindful of the present. Share a little gratefulness.

Dave Clark

Listen to "Dave Clark Releases The Album And CD All The Hits" on Spreaker. In the early years of 1960, five working class lads from Tottenham-North London came together, forming The Dave Clark Five (The DC5) - a group that would not only change but unapologetically shape the course of popular music forever and sell over one hundred million records along the way. Founded by one of the UK’s most prolific and celebrated musicians, songwriters and producers Dave Clark, the band spearheaded the British invasion of the US, becoming the first UK band to tour there and scoring an unprecedented fifteen consecutive Top Twenty hits, more than any other act bar The Beatles. Marking 60 years since the band formed, ‘ALL THE HITS’ is a definitive collection of their greatest hits, exquisitely remastered by Dave Clark at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios and available on vinyl for the first time in over 40 years. Released on BMG on January 24, 2020, ‘ALL THE HITS’ perfectly showcases how The DC5 took the world by storm and helped change the rock scene, blasting hit after hit over the world’s radio airwaves. Dave Clark’s beautifully remastered album will feature 28 tracks spanning over half a century of the band’s history, including their first number one hit ‘Glad All Over’, which famously knocked The Beatles off the UK's No.1 spot in 1964 and sold over two-and-a-half million records, followed by “Bits And Pieces” which repeated the success; a seemingly impossible feat of a semi-professional outfit, without an agent or manager. Both hits perfectly showcased The DC5’s style of sound, a unique brand of pop, weighed by the feet-stomping drums of Dave Clark and the power of Mike Smith’s vocals. Other hits include their multi-million selling record “Do You Love Me” and “Catch Us If You Can”. “It’s a trip for me to go back to vinyl. The 60s revisited. This album covers our hits from around the world on both CD and magical vinyl,” says Dave Clark. “We hope you enjoy this blast from the past.” After appearing a record-breaking 18 times on America’s iconic “Ed Sullivan Show”, which had a weekly audience of 70 million, The DC5 fleetly notched up a record-breaking 15 consecutive Top 20 U.S. hit singles within a two-year period, and sold over 100 million records worldwide. The DC5 catalogue of recordings has been one of the most sought after collections in rock history having been off the market for over a decade.

Brian Tichy

Listen to "Brian Tichy And A Farewell To Kings Release The Song Huck Finn" on Spreaker. A FAREWELL TO KINGS initially came together out of a RUSH celebration event of the same name that drummer Brian Tichy organized at the NAMM show in 2017. This included Francesco DiCosmo on bass and vocals, Walter Ino on guitar and Jonathan Sindelman on keys. Acting as the house band in the event which celebrated four decades of RUSH’s music, it featured many all-star drummers, guitarists, vocalists and bassists proving to be a momentous, inspiring occasion! After this, AFTK would play gigs when their schedules aligned. En route to one gig in 2019, Tichy said to the other guys, “What if we wrote our own song in the spirit of Rush and named it “Huck Finn”! (as a tip of the hat to “Tom Sawyer”, Rush’s most famous song.) This was half a joke that soon became a concrete idea with the potential to offer something truly unique for Rush fans, by Rush fans, and that would serve to challenge AFTK on an entirely different level! The initial writing session & recording was ambitious, fast-paced, and almost effortless. They also filmed an in-studio video for “Huck Finn”. AFTK agreed to write and record more songs with the idea of completing an EP, but scheduled conflicts got in the way and the project was put on hold. Then, this year, on January 10th, the shocking news spread around the world of the passing of iconic Rush drummer/ lyricist Neil Peart. Deeply affected by this, the guys agreed they should release “Huck Finn” as a tribute to all the decades of influence Neil has on AFTK, not to mention the impact he's had on the world of drumming, countless musicians, lyricists, writers, fans, and rock music in general! From AFTK: “We are all deeply affected by the passing of Neil Peart, in fact so much so that we feel the timing is right to release “Huck Finn”. Written and recorded over a year ago, it shows how much Neil and the band mean to us! There has never been and never will be another Rush, and certainly no other artist like Neil Peart! The world is not the same without “the Professor on the drum kit”!!! He will be sorely missed and remembered as one of the world’s greatest! Drummer Brian Tichy says, “It was clear that after the novelty of writing HUCK FINN wore off, we had a song we felt represented how much of an impact Rush had on us. Their influence has been constant in my life since I was 12 years old and Neil instantly became one of my top 3 favorite drummers of all time! RIP Neil Peart!” Bassist and singer, Francesco DiCosmo commented, “ “The inspiration of celebrating 40 years of RUSH’s amazing music as a tribute was a truly awesome experience, and even more poignant now that Neil has very sadly, passed away. We feel the need to get Huck Finn out to the world as a truly heartfelt tribute to Neil Peart and Geddy & Alex as well, and to show the gratitude of the life changing Music they have given us. The natural progression for AFTK to write an EP of adventurous music I hope will be our direction. Im sure we’ll write music that’s exciting and engaging for us so I'm sure it will be for others as well and to keep this amazing style of music alive. I’m looking forward to writing & recording more music with these great players, as testament and gratitude to Neil Peart and Rush.” Guitarist Walter Ino stated, “I remember hearing ‘Exit Stage Left’ for the first time when I was 14 years old, right when I started playing guitar. I was an immediate fan! I memorized that whole record from beginning to end, including every single hit of Neil’s drum solo on YYZ! Playing with AFTK brings me back to why I started playing music to begin with. Our first attempt at writing as a group all started from an old guitar riff that I had sitting around for years, which turned into our song “Huck Finn”. I’m so proud of what we came up with collectively! We really wanted to honor Rush and show how much they influenced us as artists and players. And now, with the passing of Neil, the heartbeat of Rush, we felt it was important for our fans to see how much they meant to us.” Keyboardist Jonathan Sindelman says, "The personal, artistic, and cultural impact RUSH has made is well beyond quantifiable. Apart from the artistic merit and accomplishments of each individual, the bonds these guys forged through music and friendship left a lasting impression on me from the time I was 12 years old. In light of Neil's passing, I would say that to me he's always been the voice of reason in rock music, and for songwriting in general. The legacy Neil led and now leaves behind, through his musicianship, lyrics and novels, will continue to be regarded and revered as something inherently good in the world. And a huge thanks to the guys in AFTK for the honorable work and standard of excellence that is the band, and for our collaboration on HUCK FINN -- Simply the good stuff, and a wonderful gift back to Rush fans!"

Guilt Trips

Listen to "Guilt Trips" on Spreaker. As children growing up in a house full of eight we did a lot of guilt tripping to get somewhere "I'm gonna tell Mom if you don't let me go first." I wish someone in middle or high school would've put some focus on how we end up moving through life attached to a personal guilt trip. How often in your present place are your decisions and choices linked to a self delivered guilt trip? On this podcast I talk about a recent one. Those moments when you stop and take a swing at your heart. What's worse is that you begin to feel like the entire world can see what you're going through! Moving through a self created guilt trip requires more than awareness. You've got to whip out a can of forgiveness and understanding. Mine was attached to an evolution of changes that moved through the way I was getting my God on. While sitting in the chairs at church I'd write and write and write until the Worship band took over. It became a huge must do because its amazing to see what's moving through you while preparing to receive. Then I discovered something that put these feet on a different path. Technology! Because I'm a huge note taker I honestly felt like I was missing a lot of the message. Guilt trip. So I began studying the word at home via the church app. I could rewind back to those moments just to make sure I heard something right. It became clearer to me as a note taker that this was the best place for me to build. I still wrote on Sundays during those 15 minutes before the sermon. Didn't skip a beat. Didn't want to face the guilt trip. Then it happened. I took a job that put me at work during what was once my studies. Getting the word was now moved to Monday Tuesday or Wednesday. Guilt trip. The writing for 15 mins beforehand stopped. Cuz it was all about taking notes! Not being a free spirit thinker whose soul needed to be prepared first. Guilt trip. Awareness sets in. Change is allowed to become the process. Forgiveness. Understanding. A willingness to grow forward without a guilt trip. Pay attention to those moments in your life where you feel great without a cup of coffee or Red Bull. Take note of how often they take place. If it's happening more and more. Invite yourself to write about what's moving through you in that moment. You'll be amazed at how incredible your imagination is when it's allowed to connect with something you can see or smell but its being felt.

Ada Calhoun

Listen to "Ada Calhoun Releases The Book Why We Can't Sleep" on Spreaker. WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP (Grove Hardcover) began as award-winning journalist and best-selling memoirist Ada Calhoun’s attempt to discover for herself why, at 40, despite having achieved many of the outward markers of success and personal fulfillment, she felt lousy!! In her search for answers, Calhoun embarked on the project that eventually became the groundbreaking and deftly researched WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP. In the process, she consulted with generational research and data experts and interviewed hundreds of middle-class, Generation X American women. The biggest discovery Calhoun made along the way was that she wasn’t alone. Moreover, she found that many of the pervasive struggles felt by women her age—with money, relationships, work, and existential despair—were unique to Gen X women. She investigated housing costs, workplace trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data and at every turn, Calhoun recognized familiar patterns. Speaking with a diverse array of hundreds of women across America—single and partnered, mothers and childless, black, white, Asian, Latina, gay, straight, liberal, conservative, evangelical and atheist—Calhoun found that this generation of women raised to “have it all” were and are, by and large, exhausted, anxious, terrified about money, under-employed, overwhelmed, and in doubt of many of the major life choices they had already made. Instead of being heard, these women have been told their issues don’t qualify as a true crisis—that they should file their feelings under the hashtag #FirstWorldProblems, and instead of complaining, to lean in, take “me time,” or make a chore chart to get their lives and homes in order. As Calhoun herself noted in “The New Midlife Crisis: Why (and How) it’s Hitting Gen X Women,” her October 2017 Oprah.com article that went viral and evolved into WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP, “The flood of advice can send the message that if you're unhappy, it's your own fault.” The research compiled in WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP says otherwise. The more she investigated, the more Calhoun discovered that Gen X women have long been subject to major historic, socioeconomic forces that limited their adult prospects and offered few to no support systems, even as expectations for their success in life remained sky high in comparison to previous generations of women. In middle age, the contradictions and chasms between what their lives were supposed to look like if they “did everything right” and the way they are actually living have come home to roost for Gen X women—and it’s making them sleepless and miserable. That sounds like a grim prognosis, but Calhoun assures readers “there is cause for hope,” suggesting that the “way out of the crisis” is by shattering the “having it all” myth, illuminating the unique cultural challenges facing Gen X women, and in doing so, “facing up to our lives as they really are.” WHY WE CAN’T SLEEP doesn’t stop at shedding light on these problems; it also offers solutions for how to emerge from the abyss―and keep the next generation of women from falling into it. Ada surmises that Gen X women should reframe the story of their lives and mistakes and learn to see themselves as “heroines worth rooting for.” This book is reassuring, empowering, and essential reading for all middle-aged women, and anyone who hopes to understand them.

Pod-Crashing Episode 40 Podcast Listening

Listen to "Pod-Crashing Episode 40 Podcast Listening" on Spreaker. Pod-Crashing Episode 40: Podcast Listening I’m embarrassed to admit it. My early days of being on the digital platform didn’t include physically listening to podcasting. I’d say it was too much terrestrial radio confidence combined with a personal drive to not want to sound like somebody else. I literally feared being influenced by others. Saying that must mean I had to deal with this issue before. My on the air radio approach. I was so addicted to listening to radio air checks from around the nation that I started impersonating those who had made it to the largest cities. I didn’t steal their act. I’d study their approach, pace, volume and inflection. I honestly wanted to give podcasting a good try by breaking into it unshaped. And that I did. Wow! Those opening episodes. It doesn’t matter how many years of radio you’ve put in, podcasting is a different beast. Here’s how I see it. Radio plays well in a crowded room while podcasting is every bit one on one. Being on the air required an energetic approach. I was talking over song intros and going into commercial breaks. You know happy happy let me pick you up! In the beginning that’s how I treated most of my podcasts. I kept telling myself, “People know you for the energy. I can’t sound boring.” My interviews and one on one lifestyle features sounded like a Southern Preacher trying to push his voice into the hearts of anyone willing to listen. Podcasting sounds better when there’s “less” and it’s directed more toward something. I picked up on that after turning Howard Stern off. I was disciplining myself to listen to podcasts from The Breakfast Club out of New York, Bobby Bones and Elvis Duran. It’s all radio people not so much trying to pump up the jams. It was real conversations and emotions. Not that Stern isn’t. I needed something to add to the daily diet. Stern’s always been on in the car. I needed something in the house. You know, for those moments when the episode is done and now you have to socially connect it to listeners. I hung up on listening to music replacing it with content driven by the masters of Broadcasting. One problem. The more I checked in the further I was from truly listening to podcasting. Charlamagne, Bobby and Elvis were pretty much putting up their daily radio shows. It was time to graduate toward Chelsea Handler, Marc Maron and Joe Rogan. Extremely long episodes that acted like two opposite ends of a magnet pushing everything back. I didn’t have an hour or more to listen to podcasting. That’s where I had to condition myself. Like real listeners do. Train yourself that take in a little bit at a time. You don’t have to hear the entire Conan O’Brien presentation in one sitting. You’ve heard of graze eating. It was time to grave listen. The only reason why I bring this up is solely based on my four most recent podcast lectures. Everybody was so excited to get into the rooms. To do nothing more than talk about nothing. I mean it was so inside that nobody outside the speakers could relate with any of their subjects. I finally had to ask, “Have any of you made podcast listening your daily creative work out?” Two. As much as I want to accuse even Oprah Winfrey for rambling on with Tina Fey, Lady Gaga and others. The talk show queen knows every question evolves into a benefit for the listener. The Planner. The Performer. The Producer. The Promotor. All four of these personalities need to be fed a river of hope and success. I get it. Podcasting is about cutting up and having fun. It’s about getting the chance to cuss and keep professional wrestling fans connected to a new age of staying close with other lovers of the sport. I’m not here to judge your content. When 98% of those at the four lectures admitted that they didn’t listen to podcasting that pretty much said, “Give me the microphone Seymour. I’m hungry!” Only to hear them ask, “How long will it take to start making money?” The Planner. The Performer. The Producer. The Promotor. The Planner is the show prep master. You don’t have write out every word. Just have a plan and respect what’s been planned. The Performer can easily get off track. It’s completely human. Refocus. If you liked where you were going while jumping off the path, write it down for a future podcast. The Performer needs to have a vision and shape. That’s because the Producer has to make sense out of all that’s been delivered. Editing is a huge strength. As a Producer I’ll rip stuff out of the conversation that’s totally a waste of a listener’s time. My good friend Michael did an 80 minute interview with a local preacher about the hard to locate answers from the Bible. The day it was posted all but 15 minutes of it made it to the listener’s ears. The preacher called me. He felt like a lot of his time had been wasted. My only reply was a lack of great content doesn’t win. The Planner creates the map. The Performer brings life to it. The Producer keeps what’s alive pushing forward. Then the Promoters hits social media. If the episode earns you few listeners or a major league hit of many thumbs down. Who do you think’s gonna catch a slap on the wrist? All of them. Communication is everything. The Producer should always keep in contact with the Planner so that he or she knows of the where it should be going. Meetings are a great start. Everybody’s on the same page. Then let’s get busy. So what’s the moral of the story? Nearly 100% of all podcasts don’t have four people playing out the role of The Planner. The Performer. The Producer. The Promotor. Those hosting the episodes have to wear every hat. Be honest with your podcast. If it’s stumbling and rough on the edges do something about it. We live in the digital age. Everything should be nearly next to perfect. What kind of message does it send out to potential advertisers if it sounds out of rhythm and nobody in tune?

And Then I lost My Job

Listen to "And Then I Lost My Job" on Spreaker. What would the world be like today if all things we've spoken were found sheets of paper? I face that question every morning. Three of my daily Podcasts are soulfully connected to the pen sketches laid out at 4:30 in the morning,. Some dating back 18 years. I don't know why. I heard something in my heart and I trusted the voice. Today I found myself face to face with the morning after the 2016 elections. What were you doing on that day? Do you remember your mood? How did you react to those with an overbearing opinion? I honestly don't care about who you voted for. I'm a Broadcaster that serves all people not one side. Which is why I don't do talk radio and will never be invited. This podcast today isn't about political parties but rather the individual you are. Thanks to technology every job on the planet is on the line. Today I invite you to make a difference. Be heard. Be strong in your confidence while being loyal to the reasons why you deliver. In November of 2016 I was lecturing to future Broadcasters. In the hours after the election results were announced those in attendance were verbally beating each other up. I didn't lose control nor did I feel defeated. I stood up for an industry that doesn't know where the real players are. It's just a number inside a world that needs believers. For your career today. Be heard. Wear your belief on your sleeve. Know your path. Tomorrow you'll be just another number.

Reflecting On A Reflection

Listen to "Reflecting On A Reflection" on Spreaker. I'm amazed at how much weight we put on our shoulders everyday. Dealing with it means walking the paths with numerous others struggling to make their own waves. I've been a daily writer since July 1994. A lot of invisible trash has been dropped on innocent sheets of paper. On this podcast we leap back to November 8, 2016. Mean anything to you? Do you remember it? Election Day 2016. A lot of moody people in and around the neighborhood and cities. People were in question. uncertain, filled to the brim with the most poisoned political commercials delivered by any generation. The daily writing that day was a note to a future self. He was pretty much saying, "I know you're there. No matter how things might change or go. I'm not gonna do anything stupid. See you soon." It's the first time I've been to this page since it came to life nearly four years ago. You think time's moving quickly? Think about your grandparents. Put some thought into your parents. They probably didn't write stuff down. Their story in your heart has a way of changing. Yeah the older we get the more we kind of go along with a story we think was right. Jotting down words for not just your future self but your grand kids is gonna share with them some pretty cool history. What was it like to see a business man take over the White House? Chances are you'll shrug your shoulders and not remember walking into that voting booth and having to make a decision. The day is quickly coming that we'll no longer talk about September 11th or the Great Recession. Yet it affected you. You were probably reshaped. Jot it down while you still have the memory. Someone in the future needs to know your story.

Jon Wiederhorn

Listen to "Jon Wiederhorn Releases The Book Raising Hell" on Spreaker. From the author of the celebrated classic Louder Than Hell comes an oral history of the badass Heavy Metal lifestyle―the debauchery, demolition, and headbanging dedication―featuring metalhead musicians from Black Sabbath and Judas Priest to Twisted Sister and Quiet Riot to Disturbed, Megadeth, Throwdown and more. In his song "You Can't Kill Rock and Roll" Ozzy Osbourne sings, "Rock and roll is my religion and my law." This is the mantra of the metal legends who populate Raising Hell―artists from Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slipknot, Slayer, and Lamb of God to Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, Disturbed, Megadeth, and many more! It's also the guiding principle for underground voices like Misery Index, Gorgoroth, Municipal Waste, and Throwdown. Through the decades, the metal scene has been populated by colorful individuals who have thwarted convention and lived by their own rules. For many, vice has been virtue, and the opportunity to record albums and tour has been an invitation to push boundaries and blow the lid off a Pandora's box of riotous experiences: thievery, vandalism, hedonism, the occult, stage mishaps, mosh pit atrocities, and general insanity. To the figures in this book, metal is a means of banding together to stick a big middle finger to a society that had already decided they didn't belong. Whether they were oddballs who didn't fit in or angry kids from troubled backgrounds, metal gave them a sense of identity. Drawing from 150-plus first-hand interviews with vocalists, guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, and drummers, music journalist Jon Wiederhorn offers this collection of wild shenanigans from metal's heaviest and most iconic acts―the parties, the tours, the mosh pits, the rage, the joy, the sex, the drugs . . . the heavy metal life! Horns up! Throw back the backstage metal curtain and dig into the pit of larger-than-life rock 'n' roll escapades! Raising Hell does just that with tales from the chaotic, erotic, psychotic mania . . . revealed here in all its glory!"―Rob Halford, Judas Priest "So you ever wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes, what made us who we are, what inspires us? Maybe you want to hear what we don't tell our significant others, you know, the dark secrets we touring musicians keep from home? John Wiederhorn collected so many great stories from all of your favorite rockers, I know my stories but reading about what everyone else went through is mind-blowing! Enjoy our lives!"―Billy Graziadei, founding member of Biohazard, Powerflo, and BillyBio "Raising Hell is a Bible of Heavy Metal Debauchery! Not only did it bring back tons of crazy, fun touring memories for me, but it also made me laugh my ass off reading about the antics of my fellow metal heads! For anyone who's ever defecated where they shouldn't have, just to make their friends laugh, this book is for you! Hell, this book is for everyone! It rules!"―Richard Christy, Charred Walls of the Damned, ex-Death, ex-Iced Earth "With Raising Hell, Jon Wiederhorn opens a treasure chest of outrageous, unflinching metal anecdotes that range from hysterical to terrifying to just plain disgusting. Each chapter is a new level of insanity!"―Scott Ian, Anthrax, S.O.D., The Damned Things

The Lyrics From Billy's Forest Chapter 185

Listen to "The Lyrics From Billys Forest Chapter 185" on Spreaker. My entire life. I've never been a fan of wind. Maybe it's because in Montana the giant gusts that would race out of Yellowstone National Park were strong enough to pick up a tree and slam it into a new story. On this podcast we talk about the wind and how in 1999 while standing in South Beach, Florida I tried to spiritually connect with the amazing about of wind blowing that night. The writer in me. The crazy imagination I carry. I stood watching the bird feathers unevenly flowing from side to side then out across the sandy beach. Then it hit me. The wind is so strong in Miami because this is where time delivers human souls. The wind blows from California to Florida picking up any or all the once living energies and brings them to the edge so they can walk without question across the water. An insane way of thinking right? It might make a great movie! Look at what Sleepless In Seattle did. Even today while sitting inside the forest I've been part of for 27 years I've never stopped thinking about that windy night in Florida. While the breeze increases and begins to bend trees I can't help but think of the souls traveling. It's a personal thing but I've never believed who we grow into becoming is empowered by the moments of where we presently stand. The wind brings a traveler to your area of the universe and its your choice to invite the soul to stay. Who they might have been is now part of your world and then some. Newer ideas, reasons to laugh, memories of something you can't explain. I know maybe it was last nights dream. The wind! It's always carrying seeds toward an un-promised tomorrow. What if for a moment you did see something while the wind was blowing and the next time you looked in the mirror a part of its shape was now in your image? How do you grow forward or are you quick to shake the spirit free?

Relationship

Listen to "Relationship" on Spreaker. We're always saying things that fly outward from our thoughts and fall into the vats of life without action and or reaction. Which is why I love to daily write. I've always been known for saying weird way out of the way stuff and yet in the moment it took place it sounded fine to me. But what are we going to do with it? Over the past 8 years I've learned that what we say in the moment doesn't always mean it was meant for right now. In November of 2016 this thought fell from my writing instrument, "God doesn't have to turn up his volume to prove his existence." It honestly had nothing to do with what was being written that morning. I'm a free form thinker. Whatever is moving through me in any moment at anytime during the day is always welcome to find a different stage anytime in a future we can't predict. The statement written nearly four years ago clearly states that where we want to grow or need to appear isn't going to be a bright red stop sign or a blinking light screaming out your name. Whatever's holding you back might actually be located in a whisper or in silence. But we keep waiting for the sign. If its meant to be you'll feel or hear something when in fact it's been walking within your thoughts the entire way. Because it came with no volume its been extremely easy to endlessly look a different way. I'm not saying you need to write daily. It's my habit and purification system and it might not be your way of carrying messages. What if yours is to record a thought into your smart phone or to set up an extremely private Twitter or Facebook page where you just throw junk out there. When you return in the years ahead there's a journey you helped document during a time when the volume might have actually been silence..
