Mainly because it’s the one tool in the box that’s gonna get you in and out of trouble. It’s going to be your biggest cheerleader and top notched judger. Somedays the ego’s not there or it shows up too strong. That’s the area of the ego the person wanted future podcasters to pay close attention to. When the ego is multiplied to super amped status. When nearly next to everything on the episode is about me, me and me. A guest is sharing their experience only to be interrupted by the host. It’s too easy to get locked up in this habit. Nobody’s doing it to one up the visitor but rather to relate with. To have something in common. A reaction. Heard too often the listeners begin to think today’s show is brought to you by me, me and one more me. First of all don’t hang up on your ego. You need it for every show. Think of your podcast as being bigger than life. Believing in your product gets people excited. Sure the ego can take you overboard and it may come across as being an alpha dog moment. Just don’t be the storyteller all the time. Ask short questions. Make even shorter statements. Get your guest engaged in you which is then transferred to your listeners. I host three self-help podcasts. The Choice, Daily Ray of Light and The Lyrics From Billy’s Forest. They look and smell like an ego driven monster. As host I read from journals of personal experience. Teaching other creative minds how to push their abilities without injuring their capabilities. Laid out like a heart on a sleeve are the steps and stumbles. The goal is to recover with a winning spirit and attitude. Through transparency listener connections are made. It’s never been an over the top ego trip. It’s confident, compassionate and filled with courage. Knowing where the thoughts are going keeps the episodes focused. Becoming aware of how the written words are delivered requires a truthful ear. Listen to your podcast in the car on a busy road. Sit in a crowded Panera Bread with ear buds blasting. Put yourself in the same place your listeners are and see if the ego is getting in the way of building a bigger community. There’s a reason why content is the number one need for listeners. Without your personal journey, I might as well be listening to a bump on a log. Inflection needs your history. Its texture controlled by the edges of your imagination attached to an ego. Turn your podcast into a drinking game. Each time you say I or Me it’s a free shot of your specialty. You’ve got to remember this is all coming from a person that believes there’s an “I” in teamwork. Teams require the strength of being an individual before becoming stronger as a community of creative minds. I totally grasp what the person was sharing. It’s easy to put yourself out there too far and be judged by the indentation your ego created in a very fragile and still truly undiscovered new world of broadcasting. But you’re gonna need that ego when you sit down with potential advertisers that have heard of podcasting but don’t trust it to bring them business. The line I keep hearing, “Wow I can definitely feel your passion for what you’re doing and it’s obvious that you’ve dug in deep and want to see this through. I need some time to digest this. I’ll get back to you. In the meantime go out find an intern that’s willing to do some grunt work for ya. Someone that knows the world of podcasting because they live it.” Swiftly you turn to your smart phone. You need an instant pick me up. Right there in plain sight your ego sees how fast the numbers are growing in the UK and Japan. Yeah but here’s the bigger truth. What do those listeners in foreign countries have to do with Keith Hawthorne Ford in Belmont NC? Sharing your strength and belief in what’s being delivered is a door opener but that chunk of wood hanging on hinges can easily slam if the product being presented has no legs to keep growing in new directions. The ego tends to get in the way of hearing about other methods of reaching a different more dependable audience. I’ve spent the past seven years designing and redesigning. Shuffling everything including my interviewing technique. Ask the questions in ways that can get the conversation on several podcasts rather than a well-defined niche that happens to like Rock stars that eat bacon on Fridays. A lot of feelings get hurt within the invisible walls of let’s do it my way. If you make it beyond seven episodes you’ll begin noticing how hard your heart is becoming. The attitude of in it to win it. Convincing your ego that landing ten listens today is still a victory. Oh wait! You just made 13 cents on Anchor.fm. Greatest show on the planet. Podcasting is no different than a Renaissance Festival. There’s a lot of crafting going on and it’s the confident artist that figures out a way to be heard and listened to constantly because in the process of learning they put a muzzle on the ego. Go into every project expecting to be bruised. If the internet trolls don’t send you wickedly induced emails then celebrate the occasion. Be open to talk with other podcasters. Facebook has specialized groups always willing to share new tricks on how to build your following without losing your foundation. Be humble while being encouraging and that requires bits and pieces of a developed ego. If that monster gets out of hand step back a few feet and count to ten. An injured ego has been trained to silence the artist. Be present with your feelings while understanding how easy it is to injure yourself. When that happens the next move could lead to fewer episodes. The most common excuse, “My job was getting in the way or I just couldn’t think of any new subjects.” When those words start falling off the edge of your lips there’s nothing anyone can do. Latch onto a book about podcasting. Scan the web for ideas you can steal. Write a letter to the host of your podcast and tell him or her that you miss them. Rebuild that ego with encouraging comments that might actually make you giggle. So what’s the moral of the story? Non-podcasters are starting to take note of how this new age of communicating content is raising the level of confidence inside the giving hearts of those that love to talk. Although I’ve been known for doing it… The great vibe the ego is giving off doesn’t work for everyone. Sharing the adventure is a huge part of the fun. To get friends and family involved most of us would a podcast studio for them in their homes. The moment they drop in a hot cup of truth about not being interested in when a few under the breath remarks are made. Keep the ego intact. You’re going to need a fit for a king confident walk for those days when Paul McCartney’s PR crew says he’s calling in at 2pm eastern and the phone never rings. So in a huge way I agree with the original seed in this conversation, “The one thing that should always appear at the top of your podcast list is your ego.” It’s good to have one but very damaging with it gets out of control. And please please whatever you do. Do not use those closest to your everyday heart soul as a place to get applause for your loyalty to podcasting. You’re setting yourself up for the big hurt.

On this podcast we talk about a 1:50 am stroll through the forest to do nothing but write. A forest is a very scary place to be alone. You truly can't see what's watching you. Will you be tripped by unseen vines? Snakes, owls, raccoons! Oh my! I've never kept my love for trees a secret. Native American's see them as great storytellers. A tree is extremely willing to sacrifice its life so that you have a place to write. And in return what are we sharing? The very late night extremely early morning walk without a path didn't come with a payoff. Just an open view as to how other things live around humans. How it survives without cable television, prepackaged foods, free music downloads and endless amounts of water. I think the one thing that stands out most about the words put down on paper is the writers need to know why had been woken. In his own handwriting style he asks "God was it you?" Big question with no answer. Laughing it off he blamed his lack of hearing on how noisy a forest is until just before sunrise. Writing and or being creative outside your normal comforts helps to clear the mind body and soul of habits shaped by mundane everyday-isms. When something feels out of the ordinary. Take the call. Be present in your now. Mindful of how getting knocked off the path builds inner strength by way of trusting the moment.

Stevie Ray Vaughan seemed poised for a new, limitless chapter of his life and career just a few years after his severe addiction to cocaine and alcohol almost killed him. His tempestuous marriage was over, and he was newly in love with a supportive girlfriend. His first collaborative album with big brother and first musical hero Jimmie Vaughan was complete and on the verge of being released. His last album with Double Trouble, In Step, had been his most successful, both critically and commercially. Instead, it all came to a screeching halt when Vaughan was killed in a helicopter crash on August 27, 1990 after that evening's dynamic performance with Eric Clapton, at the tender age of 35. In all things I'd do the mission was to tell the story of every singer/songwriter and musician that somehow got to be more than normal kids plucking away on metal strings. Gene Simmons not only played a huge role during my 40 years of radio but through the presence of music he's made a huge impact on Abby K's journey and sacrifice. My first meeting with her felt like a mirrored image. Across from me was every musician at 16. The ambition, drive, loyalty, determination, dedication and willingness to reach far beyond the presence of all things right now. The shyness was a place we've all stood. Only to hear that she changes once the eye makeup is laid into place upon a face that will soon crack the concrete walls that currently keep great Rock from being the fad favorite. At 16 I too hid behind images in a band called Painted Face. There's something about those masks musicians wear that enables the creative spirit to withstand the pressures of being compared. Once inside the shoes of music the world feels good again. Now lets sing. The world is ready for Abby K. The wait is over.

One featured event was about two police officers chasing a criminal that came face to face with a chain link fence. The events that unfolded from there is what created the chaos. The officer's stories didn't connect. No matter how hard each of them tried to picture the moment as it truly was. They weren't the same. Because I'm a daily writer I'm given the incredible opportunity to revisit experiences. Not because I live in the past. I grow from all things that have passed. On this podcast we go back to September 16, 2016. Almost three years ago. The writer was talking about how Elevation Church's Code Orange Revival was brilliantly designed to invite in what was required. Being on those pages made me question why I've not remembered it. It took a journey through daily writing to find myself back in one of the biggest moments of my life. Here's my Blind Gorilla. In this recording studio. In front of me everyday. The wristbands that were handed out during those ten days at the Code Orange Revival. They're right here! Yet this morning I started things off by being disappointed with myself for not always carrying with me the words that were brought forward from the experience. What about you? What's in those caverns and canals you've created that hold a sharper image and or answer to what's become your "Now"? Rather than searching through the daily arrival of a new sun. Maybe just maybe the avenues of peace could be sitting right there on an invisible page from a past day thought to be long gone and forgotten. Approach it not by a need to live in your past. Every now and then there's an Easter Egg waiting for me. A surprise thought. An exciting idea that could easily grow into newer shapes of creative energy. I'd say in all things that I do it's either written about first in journals or it's broken down on the pages to better understand the mindset and where the next foot step will be placed. On this podcast I go back to September 2016 to one of those days where holding onto a writing instrument was the last thing I wanted to do. You still have to answer to the discipline. The moment you teach yourself how not being in the mood is an answer is when you'll start leaning on it once a month then weekly then daily. Even when you aren't in the know of how your mind body and soul will act or react to a moment of emptiness do it any ways. In martial arts we'd do one more push up or V sit up. We'd reach beyond what we think we know only to realize through choice we were able to grow. You're not designed to love all the things you do or want to do. Do you respect it? Do you allow what you do to have a voice and say? This is why I daily write. I want to have conversations with the inner core. It might see and feel things that you're ignoring because the outside shell is trying to live up to its image. And in those moments just release. Nobody has to understand it. That's what this day of writing was clearly geared for. None of it made sense. It wasn't supposed to. I still obeyed and heard the truer purpose and plan of the daily discipline.

Those that have vision and make decisions without ever gripping the process of seeing it through. How and when? Why and where? We don't try to find out. We let others decide for us. Back to the home plate. There we are with what we think is a winning attitude. This time around we're going all out to reach for the fence. No! Just get on base. With experience you'll gain in strength. The journey will make the home run a greater victory. Reach to get on base.

The company is now celebrating the legacy of the festival by creating collectible artifacts from that very stage. “We decided to create various items of that legendary festival by offering small pieces of (literally) the centerpiece of the event, the Woodstock stage – the same floorboards on which Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and other rock greats made magic – as collectibles they can treasure,” says Gold. “People have an intense emotional attachment to the festival, whether they were there or not. With the Woodstock 50th concert still up in the air, the original stage is the only artifact that exists for people to touch and reflect upon. Its importance is beyond measure – it’s like the Holy Grail of rock music. To be able to give them a chance to own sections of the original stage is something I had to see through.” Gold, who grew up near the concert site in Bethel, NY (and who attended all three days of Woodstock when he was just 15 years old), recalls how the stage was the focal point for the nearly half million people in attendance. “I had a friend whose father worked electricity for the festival, so I had unrestricted access to what we might call the backstage area,” he says. “I’ll never forget all of those people looking at the stage, half a million people directing their energy to one place. There were no cell phones; nobody was taking pictures to post on Instagram. You had a million eyeballs witnessing the greatest music that was ever played in real time. And it was all happening on these pieces of plywood.” Weeks after the concert, Gold helped his girlfriend’s father unload pieces of plywood from a truck that were to be used to build a paddleboard court. “I was told it was the wood from the original Woodstock stage, and I couldn’t believe it,” he says. “I was literally holding sections of where Jimi Hendrix stood.” Forty-eight years after Woodstock, Gold couldn’t shake the memory, and he traveled back to the Robi Lane bungalow colony in upstate New York (about 15 miles from the original concert site at Yasgur’s Farm), where that same paddleboard court still existed. Much of the wood from the Woodstock stage also remained, and Gold, realizing its significance, persuaded the owners of the bungalow colony to let him take possession of it. “I got 3,000 square feet,” he says. “There was still painting on the wood in certain places, and I knew they were markings. While Currie and Darling had a mutual admiration for each other, the two didn’t meet until 2017, when Darling reached out to Currie to contribute vocals to Fanny Walked the Earth, a reunion album from the trailblazing band Fanny, - the first all-female band signed to a major label (Reprise) in 1969. Now fierce friends and cool collaborators, they’re singing together on the new album, The Motivator - a 12-song album featuring nine classic covers by bands including T. Rex, The Rolling Stones, Buffalo Springfield, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, plus three powerful new originals, including the tough rocker “Too Bruised” and the topical “This Is Our Time”. The tour is set for late 2019. "The Motivator" also features a host of family and friends to do backups, including Currie’s sister, actress Sondra Currie, her ex-husband, actor Robert Hays; friends, Susan Olsen of Brady Bunch fame and actress/director, Allison Scagliotti. Darling’s brother, Henry Berry is on “He Ain’t Heavy”; and brother Phil Berry does a guitar solo on the Kinks tune “Do it Again” while her sister, Rory Berry Bishop plays drums on Thunderclap Newman’s “Something in the Air.” Patti Quatro—Suzi’s sister and a member of Fanny—plays guitar and sings on “For What It’s Worth.” Darling, also known as Brie Howard, has recorded as drummer, singer and writer with Fanny in the ‘70s, as well as with the bands American Girls in the mid ‘80s and the Boxing Gandhis, who have put out three albums since the mid-90s. As a backing vocalist, and percussionist, Darling played with or has written songs for the Pointer Sisters, Jimmy Buffett, ELO, Ringo Starr, Carole King and more. Darling and Currie both have also acted in several films. Currie starred with Jodie Foster in "Foxes" (1980) and Brie starred in the film "Android," opposite Klaus Kinski. Brie’s creativity also extends to the kitchen as she is a cake artist who won her episode on the Food Network’s Cake Wars.

Combining the knowledge of each layer has been an exciting journey of growing forward and outward. If you've ever spent any time with me you've heard me blurt that thought out. Growing forward and outward. I'm never going anywhere. I'm growing everywhere. How? The power of Now. Being present in what's Now. Aware of not the past or future but what is here in the Now. Extremely difficult because it's too easy to want to be what you used to be. You have to be what you'd like to be. Yet in the Now you are... If you don't like it make the move to change it. Be in the Now. The Stock Market sucked yesterday. Today could be brighter. The word recession scares the hell out of me. Instead of putting energy in a future I can't predict I'm in control of my Now. Think about it! Even the big dogs who trade on the market can't control what's happening. If they could there would never be a bad day. What's in your Now? How can you control your Now? Stop telling people how much your boss sucks. They all do! Be positive in all things negative. Grow from your darkness by teaching yourself to see every shard of light. If all you experience is sunlight you'll never know what a bright idea is. The Power of Now. It's a lifestyle made available by choice. Winning is a choice. So is losing. It's up to you to decide what is or isn't going to become your moment.

Before 2012 I was all out radio. Not against podcasting. I was just radio. I mean a totally sick puppy that spent 12 to 15 hours a day writing and producing commercials while performing physical shows in several different markets. Part of the workday plan was to blog. The goal? Write about everything. Not text. Not IM. Blog! It was my real voice. I could say anything. Which put me in several large circles outside the realms of radio. Cool! A following that wasn’t being controlled by program directors and consultants. I was in charge of my own content and how it was being delivered. The goal was to drive the numbers up on the stations website. Big task for a non-morning show air talent. Not a battle. No war wounds. Just an open mind to walk and not jump into this new age of sharing information. I loved my readers so much that letting them hear my physical verbal inflection had to be the next step. I know! I’ll Vlog! They can see and hear me! No no noooo. A total disaster. It was at this point of the digital journey that I realized most blog readers want the intimacy of reading alone. Pictures of long haired radio people with radio voices interrupted the interpretation of what they were pulling from the blogs. My numbers dropped in the worst way. How the hell was I going to get them back? Angry at my decision to one up the performance I chose to walk away from the entire digital process to write a book called Scrambled Eggs. I wouldn’t return until it was published. When it finally sinks in. When what finally sinks in? This! Well what is this? Right. That 2.5 year break from blogging and pretending to be a radio performer is what set the stage up for podcasting to take up space inside this open field of who the hell am I? Then there it was. A television commercial for Chevrolet bragging about how their new models featured wireless internet. My Beatles moment. Blue Tooth was going to connect smart phones to the sound system in the car. I wanted to be on that platform! But with what? I talked over song intros. Podcasts are an hour or longer. I didn’t have a clue as to what I was doing. I sat down many times with national decision makers. The man that brought me to the Carolina’s in 1985 seemed ok with the idea but I can still hear him, “It doesn’t make money. So no you don’t have my attention.” Every publication and broadcast blog spoke of the proper podcast length but nobody could decide. There wasn’t enough research to prove anything right. I was in charge of production for six radio stations I couldn’t stop the wheel to pull off an hour long show. Which is a cheap way of saying I had no fricken idea what I was going to talk about. When it finally sinks in. When what finally sinks in? This! Well what is this? Right. Wait! It’s 2012! Those closest to the money in broadcasting aren’t interested in what I’m doing means I can make up my own rules! It was sinking in! You can’t break something if what you’re trying to create doesn’t exist. Sixty second Classic Rock Reports. Yes! The more I did the more listeners I was picking up. Before long I had the attention of music promoters which led to actors, authors and famous chefs. But something was still missing. My real voice. The one created by blogging. Where I could talk about anything! Vlogging didn’t work, why would I take a chance on podcasting? I finally broke the ice in 2013 with a Podcast called The Choice. My addiction to creativity would serve as the platform. Normal people don’t put in 12 to 15 hours at work. I had a habit and it was all connected to creativity. Utilizing my passion to write blogs I redesigned the layout by getting the attention off me and onto the listener. I’m not the only creative person on the planet. Outside of Julia Cameron where are the coaches and mentors that lead the builders and shapers through the desert? They’re not there! When it finally sinks in. When what finally sinks in? This! Well what is this? Right. Bringing life to a niche requires unique and a willingness to learn how to fail. Each time I found my face in the mud I went deeper with the exposure of what it’s like to be a creative. Transparency became the steps that started to climb. While the conversations with the people of fame continued to grow stronger and stronger so was the podcast The Choice. Texture was beginning to take shape. Learning how to find listeners meant playing by the same blogging rules. Write and talk about everything. One podcast will lead listeners to other podcasts. Cross pollinating the podcasts served as an invitation for listeners to explore. Oh he does this too! And this? A friend asked me in 2015, “What are you doing? One minute you’re landing a conversation with Yoko Ono then you’re talking about writing books. Your Facebook page doesn’t represent the person I thought I knew.” Remember I am no expert. I’m a daily student. I show up in this recording studio every morning at 5:30 to try and figure out why I’m here and not where my dreams should’ve landed me. Only one GM supported my footsteps during my final moments in terrestrial radio. He was enthusiastic because I was energized. He listened to my gut reaction to how listeners could get what they on demand. Any subject about every possible thing. This is where you put in the sponsor. His exact words, “I don’t know what you’re doing but I understand why you’re doing it.” Today iHeart Radio boasts with a very loud voice how they’re the world’s largest podcast outlet. I’m blessed to host 9 completely different podcasts on the platform. So what’s the moral of the story? When it finally sinks in. When what finally sinks in? This! Well what is this? Right. That moment when you decide how important your art is to the world. When you sit down and record your first podcast. Struggle to get the second finished while endlessly envisioning new ideas that could lead my listeners to your performance. When it finally sinks in that podcasting isn’t going away. It’s just getting started. There’s a lot of weeds in this wheat field. Quoting Steven Furtick, you can’t pull what doesn’t belong in the field out. You’ll injure the roots of the wheat. In all things podcasting, great shows to shake your head can’t believe I just sat through that. Let it grow. Let the weeds live with the wheat.
